Transition Student & Staff Receive State Recognition
Sycamore Community Schools is proud to announce two members of Transition Internship Program (TIP) have received the Horn/Walter Outstanding Achievement Awards in Special Education for the Greater Cincinnati region.
TIP Instructor Tamara Brewer and TIP student Whitney Philpott were honored during an award luncheon in Columbus on June 15.
The Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Educator Award is presented to one educator or team from each of the 16 State Support Team regions, who have made extraordinary contributions to the education of students with disabilities. Ms. Brewer has been instrumental in establishing Sycamore’s TIP program, which helps prepare special needs students ages 18-21 for life after high school. Students learn money management skills, job training, community integration, and authentic independent living skills while attending class at a district-owned home.
“Ms. Brewer is an advocate for increasing student independence as they prepare to transition from public school services to the world of adult services,” said Stacey Spencer, Director of Student Services. “The young adults Tamara serves, their families, and Sycamore staff have all benefited greatly from her resiliency, resourcefulness, creativity, dedication, and unbounded desire to honor and embrace the work she does every day.”
The R.A. Horn Outstanding Achievement Award is presented to one exemplary special education student from each region. This prestigious award recognizes students’ remarkable performance. Philpott has been successful in developing vocational skills through participating in Walgreen’s REDI program, as well as working with Brewhaus Dog Bones. She was named TIP Employee of the Month in October 2015.
“Whitney has particularly excelled while attending TIP,,” Spencer said. “She has confirmed for us the intention of this program as she continues on a path to become a successful young adult.”
