Sycamore High School's "Hoops for Hope" for Cancer Research

Sycamore High School and Mason High School are putting aside their rivalry to team up in the fight against cancer this week. “Hoops For Hope” is a week-long fundraiser that culminates with two special basketball matchups between the Aviators and Comets. The money raised will help the Lothrop family, who have ties to both schools. Their daughter, Liz, is currently in her second battle with cancer.

Liz’s father, Randy, is a very popular math teacher at Sycamore High School. While Liz attended Mason High School, the Sycamore Family has always regarded her as one of our own. In October 2008, Liz was diagnosed with Acute B Precursor Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She went through numerous treatments and was released from care in March 2011.

In June 2015, Liz once again entered in a fight for her life when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She has undergone multiple surgeries, cranial radiation, and is now undergoing chemotherapy. The Lothrops have been making many trips to Duke University Hospital for treatments.

Now Sycamore and Mason are coming together in hopes of raising $20,000 for the Duke Clinical Research Institute in honor of the Lothrop family. Hopes for Hope Spirit Week begins on Jan. 19. Students are encouraged to dress up in each day’s theme and participate in several different fundraising events:

1/19 Too America Tuesday: Students are asked to patriotic colors and bring spare change to lunch for collection.
1/20 Hawaiian Wednesday: Students are asked to wear Hawaiian shirts. Buffalo Wild Wings at Harpers Point will donate 20% of their proceeds all day long to Hoops For Hope. They’re also hosting a Wing Eat-Off at 7:30 p.m.
1/21 Jersday Thursday & Layups 4 Liz: Students are encouraged to wear Sycamore spirit wear. During lunch, students can challenge friends, teachers, even Principal Mader to a layup challenge. Lunch time is 11:36 a.m.-12:36 p.m.
1/22 Flaunt Your Gray Friday: Students are asked to wear their Hoops for Hope t-shirts, which are available for $15. The SHS basketball team will be collecting donations.

1/26: Hoops for Hope Boys’ Varsity Game: Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. at Sycamore High School. The Lothrop family is expected to attend. The Kings Firecrackers, a local competitive jump roping team, will be performing at halftime. The winners of the Hoops for Hope Raffle Baskets will also be announced.
