Questions about the 2022-23 academic calendar?

  • The 2022-23 academic calendar may look a little different than in years past. We wanted to provide you with a list of frequently asked questions regarding the calendar for next year to clear up any confusion this may be causing families.

Why are the start and end dates different from years past?

The 2022-23 school year will begin on August 29. This is due to the ongoing Master Facility Plan projects happening across the district, including the opening of the new E.H. Greene Intermediate this Fall. Crews also continue to work towards the opening of the new Sycamore Junior High, which means the last day of school must be June 2 in order to ensure construction is completed on time for the 2023-24 school year.

How does the calendar impact student instructional time?

Even with a later start and earlier end date, the district has worked to maintain as much instructional time with students as possible. The Board-approved calendar provides 170 academic days for students, which is 15 days over the state requirement. This does not include the five Student Personal Learning Days in which students will be provided purposeful, asynchronous assignments to complete. In a typical year, we usually have around 172-175 days for students.

What are Student Personal Learning Days?

New for the 2022-23 school year, there will be five Student Personal Learning Days. These days are in conjunction with Professional Learning Days for our staff as well as Teacher Records Days. Rather than having a day off from school, students will be provided with purposeful learning assignments that will be completed asynchronously. These days do not count towards state requirements. However, we felt it important to maximize student learning even on days when teachers are completing other work. Once our Master Facility Plan is completed, Student Personal Learning Days will go away.

Why are there so many Professional Learning Days for staff?

The later start date made it difficult for us to meet the state’s requirement for 185 teacher days. Therefore, we added Professional Learning Days for staff at the start and end of the school year so as to not further impact student instructional time. We value time with our staff without students to engage in deeper discussion and planning to help our students achieve and grow at the highest levels.
