Early Admission to Kindergarten
-
The practice of admitting a student to kindergarten who has not yet reached the typical kindergarten age for the purpose of providing access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities.
Since Kindergarten Early Entrance is equivalent to grade acceleration, the requirements are comprehensive and stringent. A team will thoroughly review each applicant’s information to determine if early placement would be advantageous for the child. The process strongly takes into consideration: scores exceptionally well on cognitive testing, has advanced reading and math skills, advanced oral language and vocabulary, demonstrates advanced social skills with the ability to attend to a task, and emotional maturity.
If you would like to initiate this application, please complete the Kindergarten Early Entrance Application and one copy of the Kindergarten Readiness Checklist. A second copy of the Kindergarten Readiness Checklist may be completed by another person who knows the child well such as a pediatrician, preschool teacher, or child care provider. These materials should be returned to the school building your child would attend for Kindergarten, to the attention of the school psychologist.
If you would like to discuss Kindergarten Early Entrance or have questions about the application process, please call the building principal or school psychologist who will be happy to talk with you about options for your child.
Please send any requests for early entrance testing to your building principal. The building principal will then work with the school psychologist wto arrange for a time for your child to come in for testing at the child's home school. We complete all testing for early entrance prior to the start of the school year. All Early Entrance Applications must be submitted by August 1 to facilitate assessments and enable the child to attend the first day of school, if appropriate.
