SHS National Honor Society

Membership in the National Honor Society is open to juniors and seniors and is based upon four areas: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. To meet the scholarship requirement, a student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.6. Leadership is demonstrated through participation in at least three school activities and evaluations from teachers and sponsors. Service is a very important part of the selection to NHS and is assessed through work of an extended nature in the community. Students must complete 20 hours of volunteer activities to apply for membership.
Character is the fourth area required for membership. It is composed of the following elements:
- Integrity: No recorded incidents of cheating or intentional dishonesty.
- Positive Behavior: No record of skipping classes or knowingly violating school regulations. No record of civil offenses within the community.
- Cooperation: Willingness to assist classmates, faculty members, etc.
- Ethics: Consistent moral behavior.
A faculty selection committee reviews the applications from all candidates and makes recommendations for membership. Once they achieve membership status, students must continue to adhere to the above criteria and are expected to serve our school as tutors and perform other volunteer service projects.
Questions regarding the National Honor Society can be directed to the NHS sponsors, Mr. Darius Powell or Mr. Mel Hoffert.
