Erin's Law: What You Need To Know About New State Requirements

  • Sycamore Schools will be implementing a new learning requirement mandated from the state of Ohio. The recently enacted Senate Bill 288, also known as Erin’s Law, includes new health education curriculum requirements related to child sexual abuse, dating violence, and sexual violence prevention. Erin’s Law also allows parents to opt their child out of this learning.

Per the law, all schools must provide state-approved, developmentally appropriate instruction on child sexual abuse prevention to students Grades K-6 before the end of the year. This instruction aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to protect themselves and ensure their safety.

You can find additional information regarding the specific K-6 programming on our website. The programming is being provided by Family Services. If you have questions about the curriculum you can contact Michael Maresca at or 937-222-9481.

We understand that every family is unique, and the educational needs of each student may vary. As a result, the law allows for parents and legal guardians to request that their child be excused from taking instruction in child sexual abuse prevention. If you wish to opt your K-6 child out of this instruction, please complete this opt-out form.

Schools are required to offer state-approved, developmentally appropriate instruction in dating violence prevention and sexual violence prevention to students once during their 7th -12th grade years. This instruction has been part of our high school Health curriculum for many years. Families are notified with an opportunity to opt out prior to this instruction taking place in the health classroom.

If you are dissatisfied with these new requirements, we urge you to reach out to your local representative and senator to express your concerns directly. Thank you for your understanding, and for working together to ensure the safety and well-being of our students
