- The student will be evaluated by the Acceleration Evaluation Committee (AEC).
- The building Gifted Intervention Specialist or student’s Guidance Counselor will coordinate the completion of the IAS.
- The building administrator or gifted intervention specialist will be in contact to clarify the process with the parent/guardian
- The AEC shall be comprised of, but not limited to, the following:
- a principal or assistant principal from the student’s school;
- a current teacher of the referred student for whom acceleration is being considered; ○ a teacher at the grade level to which the student may be accelerated; ○ a school counselor and/or school psychologist if administered a test;
- a gifted education coordinator or gifted intervention specialist or a school psychologist or school counselor if a gifted coordinator or gifted intervention specialist is not available; ○ a parent or legal guardian of the referred student or a representative designated by a parent or legal guardian;
- the student himself/herself with parent/guardian permission.
The AEC is charged with the following responsibilities:
● To conduct a fair and thorough evaluation of the student using the Iowa Acceleration Scale (IAS), the district approved assessment tool that is approved by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.
● The components of the IAS provide a comprehensive guide to be used as the primary instrument in discussion and decisions regarding a student’s whole-grade acceleration. The IAS is composed of ten sections: general information, school history, critical items, evaluation of the students ability, aptitude, and achievement, school and academic factors, developmental factors, interpersonal skills, and attitude and support. Each of these sections contain items relevant to the success of a grade skip.
● To consider the impact of whole-grade acceleration on future coursework and long-term academic planning.
