Inclement Weather

Students should dress appropriately for the weather to ensure their safety and comfort in the event of breakdowns, accidents, and traffic conditions that may cause students to wait longer at their bus stops.

In the event of inclement weather, the district may implement one of two plans:

  • Schools Closed: All Sycamore schools will be closed for the day, latch-key programs will not operate, and all after-school activities will be canceled unless those involved are otherwise notified.
  • 2-Hour Delay: School buses will run on a 2-hour delay, and morning preschool, morning kindergarten, and Head Start classes will be canceled. Afternoon kindergarten, afternoon preschool, and afternoon Head Start classes will operate as usual. Dismissals for all other grades will occur as usual. The two hours will be added to the original start for your students’ building.

Sycamore also encourages teen drivers to ride the bus instead of navigating hazardous roadways.

If a student who does not usually ride the bus wishes to ride the bus during inclement weather, they should call the Sycamore Transportation Department at 686-1785 one hour before their school opens.

The decision to close school or issue a two-hour delay is carefully considered as district personnel evaluate road conditions well in advance of making a decision. Local law enforcement and local municipality officials are also consulted in this process. However, the ultimate decision rests with the superintendent of Sycamore Community Schools.

We will communicate this decision to you through local media, a phone call, an email, social media, and our website. Calls will be made no earlier than 5:00 a.m. and no later than 10:00 p.m.

In the case of a rare early dismissal, Sycamore Schools would greatly appreciate it if you reviewed with your family's plan with your students for after school arrangements.
