Board Approves Change to Kindergarten Process
The Sycamore Board of Education has approved a revised policy modifying the cutoff date for kindergarten enrollment, taking into account feedback from our young families.
Effective with the 2026-27 school year, children must be five years old on or before August 1 to enroll in kindergarten. Children who turn six on or before August 1 and have completed kindergarten will be eligible to enroll in first grade. Previously, the cutoff date was September 30.
Initially, the Board considered implementing this change for the 2025-26 school year. However, after listening to community feedback, the district decided to provide families an additional year to prepare for the adjustment.
This change aligns with the increasing academic demands placed on our youngest learners and aims to ensure children are developmentally prepared for kindergarten. The district strives to set all students up for greater success by making this shift, enabling every child to thrive from the very first day.
Again, the cutoff date for kindergarten enrollment for the 2025-26 school year will remain September 30, 2025. This change will be implemented the following school year.
Kindergarten registration for the 2025-26 school year will begin in January. Please look for more information regarding registration and the lottery process for full-day kindergarten in the coming weeks.
