UPDATE: Change in Kindergarten Registration Eligibility

Postcard Detailing Kindergarten Registration Begins January 12
Sycamore Community Schools

In December 2025, House Bill 114 was signed into law, changing how kindergarten eligibility is determined across the state. All Ohio districts must now follow a uniform age requirement based on the first day of school.

To enroll in kindergarten for the upcoming school year, children must now be five years old on or before the first day of Sycamore instruction, which is August 17, 2026.

What this means for families:

  • New Cutoff Date: Our previous August 1 eligibility date is no longer in effect, per state law.
  • Expanded Eligibility: If your child turns five between August 2 and August 17, they are now eligible to start kindergarten this year.
  • Additional Enrollment: Children who turn six on or before August 17, 2026, and have not yet completed first grade, must also be enrolled.

We know this change may impact your family’s planning. Whether this brings relief or new questions, our team is ready to support you through the transition.

Kindergarten registration opens on Monday, January 12! Register and learn more about the program here.
