E.H. Greene Student Uses School Project to Help Cancer Patients
E.H. Greene Intermediate student Remie Russell is using a school project to help young cancer patients at Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital. The 6th grader is raising money to make headbands for children undergoing chemotherapy treatments.
The 11-year-old’s vision started in Mrs. Angela Ryan’s class, which participates in Genius Hour. Each of Mrs. Ryan’s students selects a project, researches, creates a plan and creates something about which he or she is passionate. For Remie, her passion was to help kids with cancer, after seeing a family relative fight the same battle. She calls it “Bows for a Change.”
Remie has been working closely with Children’s Hospital to develop headbands that are easy to clean and gentle on patients’ skin. Now her efforts are raising money to make 250 decorated headbands to give to kids.
“I wanted girls that didn’t have any hair or very little hair to feel prettier,” Russell said.
Remie’s project has gained the attention of local television news. Click here to see a story by WCPO’s Steve Wegener.
