Sycamore Celebrates Black History Month By Giving Back
Sycamore Community Schools is celebrating Black History Month with a student-led drive to give back to the local community.
Sycamore High School’s Young Scholars Club has launched a districtwide “School Supplies to Enrich Lives” drive to benefit The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Cincinnati. Students at the high school will be collecting school supplies, while students at the elementary schools have been tasked with collecting toiletries and personal care items.
With the overall goal being to educate and bring awareness to the true importance of this particular month, Young Scholars made it their mission to convey an eye-opening message.
“This is bigger than us. This is for people who are less fortunate than us and I want everybody to get in on this. I want everybody to show school pride.” said senior Myron Williams.
“Unfortunately, Cincinnati stands at the bottom five-percent nationwide for child poverty with 74% of African American children being impoverished, with 64% of those being under the age of six,” said senior Asa Hodrick.
Young Scholars hopes to make the drive an annual Black History Month tradition with great results within the Sycamore community this year.
“I’m glad that we could plan all of this my senior year but I’m excited about the future,” said Young Scholars President Jaslyn Davis-Johnson. “It’s a blessing to be an advocate for the African Americans here at Sycamore High School that take pride in this education system. I hope I’m able to have an impact on them before graduating.”
The friendly competition ends February 22. Donations can be placed in the bins at each of our schools.
Additionally, Young Scholars is holding a poster contest. The goal is for students to learn about prominent African Americans who have made an impact on America’s history. The posters will be displayed throughout the high school.
