Blue Ash Students Participate in Carton2Garden Contest
Big things are blooming at Blue Ash Elementary thanks to a creative classroom project. Students have re-purposed milk and juice cartons to enhance the school garden as part of a nationwide contest.
Students, staff, and parents collected more than 1,050 paper milk cartons for the project. Then, the students transformed the cartons into window boxes, lattices, paper flowers, and even a scarecrow for the Sweetwood Garden.
On April 5, students and parent volunteers went to work setting up the carton creations and planting flowers in the garden. The carton planters containing pansies, marigolds, and petunias now line the window sills. Colorful cartons shaped like flowers have sprung up in the flower beds. And a carton scarecrow now stands watch over the vegetables. Lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, and peas were planted and will eventually be harvested for students to eat in the cafeteria.
“The Sweetwood Garden looks beautiful with the student enhancements,” Tami Miller, Blue Ash Elementary Science Leader, said. “This collaborative effort between parents, staff and students allowed for more innovative ideas and experiences to take place in an existing resource used for curriculum and enjoyment.”
The project was made possible thanks to donations from local businesses Stadelmann Properties, LLC and H.J. Benken Florist.
The Carton2Garden Contest encourages schools to create teachable moments on environmental stewardship, sustainable packaging, and healthy living. The winning school garden will be granted a $5,000 prize.
