Strike up the Band for Hunger will take place on Saturday, November 5 from 6:00pm-6:30pm at the Sycamore High School Soccer Stadium located at 7400 Cornell Road. The Sycamore High School Marching Band will be performing their award winning 2016 show, “Vortex” while helping fight hunger in the Sycamore School District. Admission is a donation of two non-perishable food items.
This event was instituted in 2015 by Sycamore High School Marching Band Director, Jim Blankenship, who saw an opportunity for members of the community to come see the Marching Band perform and for the Marching Band to give back to the community.
“We are so fortunate to have the generous support of the Sycamore Community for not just the Marching Band but all of our Arts programs that “Strike up the Band for Hunger” just seems like the obvious thing for us to do to give back to our community,” said Lonnie Stover, Supervisor of Music for Sycamore Community Schools. “We also have members of the community who aren’t able to come see us at a competition or football game but would love to see the full competition show production. This is a convenient way to see the full show right here at Sycamore and helps us support those in our community that need our help.”
Last year’s event resulted in the donation of nearly 1,000 non-perishable food items and the goal for this year is to double that amount. Donations will be distributed to local non-profit Operation Give Back, which helps students and families in our community.
The Sycamore High School Marching Band has received several accolades during the first few months of the 2016-2017 school year. They placed first in class AAAA at the Lebanon High School Mid-States Band Association Competition, earning awards in six categories including Grand Champion and Best Music Overall. The Marching Aviators earned second in Class AAAA at the Kings High School Mid-States Band Association Competition and were awarded Reserve Grand Champion. They achieved a Superior Rating and qualified for State Finals at the Hamilton High School Ohio Music Education Association Competition. Most recently, the Aves Marching Band swept all categories at the Miamisburg High School Mid-States Band Association Competition, earning the title of Reserve Grand Champions.
