SHS Holds Fundraiser for Hurricane Maria Victims

A Sycamore High School student with a close connection to Puerto Rico raised funds for the victims of Hurricane Maria.

Junior Karisa Grandison has family in Puerto Rico and felt obligated to do something. Widespread power outages continue three weeks after the powerful storm hit. More than 1.2 million people are still without potable water. Grandison herself was unable to communicate with her family in the wake of the deadly storm.

“I know how people with family there feel and I'm doing this for them,” said Grandison.

After seeing how many donations students brought in for those affected by Hurricane Harvey and Irma, junior Karisa Grandison sought out her own idea to help the people of Puerto Rico.

With the help of her fellow AP Spanish classmates, Grandison hosted “Unidos por Puerto Rico” on October 13. Students and staff helped raised $400 while also raising awareness about the devastation caused by Maria. All of the money raised will go to the Hispanic Federation.
