SHS Teacher Named Rotary Educator of the Year
A Sycamore High School teacher was named the 2019 local Rotary Club Educator of the Year.
The Rotary Club of Northeast Ohio recognized engineering teacher and district STEAM Coordinator Brad Williams at a special ceremony on October 17.
Williams leads the engineering and industrial technology department at Sycamore High School. Right now students in his class are designing and building a tiny house, which will be completed in 2020. Williams also led his students to design and construct an electric race car that competed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2018. Students are currently working on tweaking the car's design.
"While teaching his students, he engages them in authentic and real-life projects that challenge their thinking and prepare them for future opportunities," said Frank Forsthoefel, superintendent. "Students are engaged in these ongoing projects because they are relevant to their learning."
As the district STEAM coordinator, he oversees the utilization of the Aviation Station, the district's mobile STEAM classroom. He also planned and implemented the first and second annual district-wide STEAM Showcase which highlights innovative programming throughout the district.
Williams recently accompanied a delegation from the city of Blue Ash on a sister city visit to Illmeanu, Germany and collaborated with representatives from that city on innovation. He also has partnered with Kroger Technology Solutions to build a Makerspace at Sycamore High School.
