Sycamore High School Hosts Pulitzer Prize Winning Journalist
Sycamore High School will host Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Sonia Nazario on Thursday, September 22.
Nazario is best known for her award-winning book, “Enrique’s Journey,” in which she documents her real-life travels with a Honduran boy struggling to be reunited with his mother in the United States. Nazario clung to the tops of freight trains with Enrique for three months to offer a personal perspective on the perils modern day immigrant children face. Published as a series in the Los Angeles Times, “Enrique’s Journey” won the Pulitzer prize for feature writing in 2003. It was later turned into a best-selling book.
Nazario’s humanitarian efforts led to her selection as the Don and Arvonne Fraser Human Rights Award recipient from the Advocates for Human Rights in 2015. She also was named a 2015 Champion for Children by First Focus, and a 2015 Golden Door winner by HIAS Pennsylvania. In 2016 the American Immigration Council gave her the American Heritage Award.
All students enrolled in upper-level Spanish courses will attend Nazario’s speech. Students from other local school districts have also been invited to listen to this award-winning journalist.
