Aves Power of Pen Team Places At State Competition

Power of the Pen Team

Sycamore Junior High’s Power of the Pen team placed at the 2017 Ohio Power of the Pen Competition.

Rising eighth grader Aliza Newton received 13th place and rising freshman Rishi Verma received 14th place in the state of Ohio out of more than 7,500 students who originally entered the competition in December. Only the top 30 in the state of Ohio actually place, 15 from each grade level.

Other awards are given out to students from the previous year for Best of Rounds, Poetry and Promising Young Talent which are determined after the State competition. Rising sophomore Linya Guo was awarded third for Promising Young Talent.

Power of Pen Program is an exclusive to Ohio, competitive creative writing program that has been running for more than 30 years. Students in seventh and eighth grade compete at the district, regional, and the state levels in the field of creative writing. During a competition, students are given prompts that they have never seen and are to write a full story within a 40 minute time period. Judging of the three rounds is tallied and points are given and accumulated for each individual and for the teams.
