Sycamore Teacher Named Ohio Adapted Physical Educator of the Year
Sycamore Community Schools teacher Paula Anstaett has just been named the Ohio Adapted Physical Educator of the Year.
Each year, the Ohio Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (OAHPERD) gives this prestigious award to one Adapted Physical Education teacher in the state who has made a significant contribution to the field of adapted physical education.
In addition, the recipient must demonstrate exceptional talent in designing, modifying and adaptation of the learning environment and activities which support the successful inclusion of special needs students into the regular physical education classroom to the fullest degree possible. The recipient must also foster student achievement of independent living and self-control, through the media of sport, physical education, and recreation.
“Mrs. Anstaett epitomizes the essence of a caring and extremely talented teacher. Each and every day she strives to create learning opportunities and environments that are conducive to her students' success,” said Frank Forsthoefel, superintendent. “She is a fantastic representative of the Sycamore Family and we are so proud of her.”
Sycamore’s Adapted PE program has provided opportunities for special needs students grades 1-12 to engage in sports, physical education, and recreated based on individual student needs since 2009. Anstaett has led the program since its inception at the high school.
Anstaett leads district-wide events annually that successfully integrate students with special needs and their same age peers without disabilities. These events include the Joe Nuxhall Miracle Field baseball event, Perfect North Slopes, and an Adapted PE Field Day within the Blue Ash community.
“Paula has made a lasting impact on Sycamore Community Schools. Her inclusive mindset, practice, and passion have supported the development of the Adapted PE Program within our district that has reached far beyond the students she provides services to,” said Stacey Spencer, Director of Student Services.
Anstaett received the award on November 30 at the OAHPERD Convention in Sandusky.
