Opus Magnum To Sycamore Latin Students

Sycamore Latin students earned top honors at the Ohio Junior Classical League (OJCL) convention March 9-11.

Sycamore Latin students at OJCL Sycamore Junior High and Sycamore High School sent 31 students to this year’s state competition, more than double previous years. In total, they received 39 individual awards.

Over 500 students competed at the 68th annual OJCL Convention in Columbus, which celebrates the study of Latin in Ohio schools. Each year, there are a variety of competitive activities including academic tests, art contests, certamen, and creative performances.

Eleven students received multiple awards. Several students placed in the top three in their categories including:

  • Grant Bruner (11)
    • Roman History, 1st Place
    • Roman Life, 1st Place
    • Reading Comprehension, 2nd Place
    • Grammar, 3rd Place
    • Pentathlon, 3rd Place
  • Vivian Qian (8)
    • Color Pencil Drawing, 1st Place
    • Ink Drawing, 3rd Place
    • Pencil Drawing, 3rd Place
  • Allie Leech (7)
    • Illustrated Children’s Book, 2nd Place
    • Traditional Photography, 2nd Place
  • Alex Ma (9)
    • Derivatives, 2nd Place

The convention also offers a number of social activities including a dance, toga banquet, and OJCL’s Got Talent. This year, Atkinson, Maya Chamberlain, Leech, Ma, and Ashna Prakash finalized for the talent show. In addition, Matthew Silverstein and Prakash performed the first place roll call on the opening night.

Grant Bruner sworn in as OJCL President for 2018-19 The state convention is also an opportunity for students to run for the OJCL Executive Board. Bruner was elected as toe OJCL President for the 2018-2019 school year.
