SHS Chorale To Perform in Broadway Musical 'The Who’s Tommy'
Coming off the heels of performing at Riverbend with Foreigner this summer, Sycamore High School Choral Program's Select Ensemble has been invited to perform in the Broadway Musical "The Who's TOMMY" at Memorial Hall.
Twenty-four choral members will perform in the iconic rock opera with equity performers, pit orchestra musicians, and production team, with music direction by University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music theatre faculty.
"This opportunity gives students a real-world, professional application of college and career readiness in the performing arts," said Ken Holdt, Choral Director. "Students will perform in a historic space with some of the best musicians and performers Cincinnati has to offer."
The rehearsal schedule and timeline challenges students with real-life performing arts in a fast-paced yet supportive environment. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to experience a concert setting of a musical piece, similar to that of an oratorio. While there will be no sets, there will be lights, projection, costumes, and dance elements.
As part of their preparation, students, staff and parents discussed connections between a rock opera and a typical classical opera, making connections to aria, chorus numbers, recitative, through-composed music, the nature of the work being autobiographical, in part, of rock legend Peter Townsend's life, and other facets of the project. Students and parents met together to address the mature themes in this show, as well as the message of overcoming adversity, despite difficult life circumstances.
Additionally, seniors Miriam Chowdhury and Ty Race will be featured as 4-year-old and 10-year-old Tommy respectively.
"The Who's TOMMY" will be performed September 14-15 and Sept. 20-21 at Memorial Hall (1225 Elm St., Over-the-Rhine). Tickets/more info: memorialhallotr.com. Learn more about the show by clicking here.
The choir performs next at the Sycamore High School Variety Show on October 6 in the SHS Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. Tickets go on sale Friday, September 21 at www.aveschoir.org.
