Sycamore FIRST LEGO League Teams Advance To Districts
After months of researching solutions to problems in space, designing and programming an autonomous robot to complete a variety of missions, and developing cohesive group dynamics, Sycamore Robotics FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams emerged at the top in regional competition. Nine out of 10 Sycamore FLL teams won awards, advanced to the next level, or both. Congratulations to all of these teams.
Approximately 75 Sycamore students from 4th grade to 7th grade have competed in FLL this season. They are led by volunteer coaches.
The following five teams, with their awards stated below if applicable, have advanced from regionals to district competition, to be held at Loveland Middle School on Saturday, Jan. 5.
- Brick Girls, representing Sycamore Junior High and Edwin H. Greene Intermediate School with an additional student from Mason Intermediate School, won the Robot Performance Award and 2nd Place Champion’s Award at the Cincinnati State tournament.
- Electric Warriors, representing Blue Ash Elementary with an additional student from Hilltop Elementary in Reading, advanced from the Cincinnati State tournament. Teacher Lori Klima is one of the team’s coaches.
- Green Machines, a neighborhood team with students from Greene and Maple Dale Elementary, won the 1st Place Champion’s Award at the Sycamore tournament.
- Legion of Legos, a neighborhood team with students from Sycamore Junior High, won the Project Award at the Cincinnati State tournament.
- Microbots, representing Greene with an additional student from Madeira Middle School, won the Core Values Award at the Beak Squad tournament.
The following four teams received awards in regional competition:
- Cosmic Builders, representing Maple Dale, Montgomery Elementary and Symmes Elementary, won the Judges Award at the Ross Rambotics tournament. Sycamore High School teacher Greg Cole is one of the team’s coaches.
- Cyb3rstorms, representing Greene, won the Core Values Award at the Cincinnati State tournament.
- EV3ryWON, representing Greene, won the Core Values Award at the Ross Rambotics tournament.
- Lego McLego Face, representing Greene, won the Project Award at the Sycamore tournament.
The following team also represented Sycamore in regional competition:
- AstroGroots, representing Greene, competed at the Beak Squad tournament.
Overall approximately 500 teams compete in regional FLL tournaments in Ohio with about 145 teams moving forward to district. Eventually two teams will be selected to represent Ohio in the World Tournament.
FLL involves programming an autonomous robot using a LEGO MINDSTORMS set, researching and solving a real-world scientific problem, and demonstrating core values such as teamwork, “gracious professionalism” and “coopertition” (a combination of cooperation and competition). This year’s FLL theme, INTO ORBIT, challenges teams to identify and solve a physical or social problem faced by humans during long-duration space exploration.
Sycamore Regional Tournament, FLL Jr. and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Teams
For the second year, the Sycamore Robotics program hosted an official FLL regional qualifier in the Cincinnati region in December at Greene. The Sycamore tournament was one of five in the region and included 16 teams throughout Cincinnati.
In addition to the 10 FLL teams with Sycamore students, the school district also has students participating in several FLL Jr. teams for younger elementary students and several FIRST Tech Challenge teams for junior high and high school students.
- The LegoLand FLL Jr. team, representing Montgomery and Maple Dale, exhibited its knowledge about the moon at the Ross Rambotics expo and received the Efficient Builders Award. Sycamore high school teachers Greg Cole and Andrew Oakes are two of the team’s coaches.
Other FLL Jr. and FTC teams will be competing in the near future.
