English Language Arts

Emerging English Learners (ELs) in grades K-4 receive language arts instruction from a classroom teacher. In grades 5-12, emerging ELs receive sheltered language arts instruction with an emphasis on building reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.

Progressing ELs in all grades receive language arts instruction in a Language Arts classroom. Some ELs are in a class that is co-taught by both a Language Arts teacher and an ESOL Teacher.

All of these options focus their curriculum on student needs as determined by assessment results, in addition to the Ohio English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards and the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

Each student’s growth is measured using research-based formative instructional practices, summative assessments, as well as, Ohio's English Language Arts end-of-year assessments and the annual Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment.
