Sycamore HS Choral Ensembles Earn Top Ratings
Three Sycamore High School Choral ensembles received Superior or Excellent ratings at the Ohio Music Education Association Large Group Adjudicated State Competition on April 29.
Select Ensemble received a Superior rating in the Class A competition. Aviator Chorale, who advanced to state for the first time, received an Excellent rating in Class C. Bella Voce also received an Excellent rating in Class B. Repertoire is selected from tiered lists that categorize ensembles into certain classifications for music difficulty.
For this event, each ensemble performs a set of three prepared pieces on the concert stage for three adjudicators, receiving a rating from each adjudicator, as well as written and real-time recorded feedback about their performance.
The final portion of the event had each ensemble participate in sight-reading. Upon entering the room, the ensemble had four minutes to consider a piece without singing, before singing once with piano accompaniment. Following the first reading with piano accompaniment, an intervening minute allows to students to identify and work out difficult passages, again without singing, before singing again. The second reading is done acapella, just a five-minute span from the time when the students first saw the music.
