The National Merit Scholarship Program recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional academic ability based on their performance on the PSAT taken during the junior year. This year the cut-off score was raised to 217.
These talented students are part of about 16,000 national semifinalists who have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 scholarships worth $33 million that will be offered next spring. In February, around 15,000 Semifinalists in the nation are notified by mail that they have advanced to Finalist standing.
Sycamore’s National Merit semifinalists are Justin Banke, Allison M. Brown, Shiva R. Devarajan, Daniel P. Dong, Joshua D. Glauser, Jun Nishikawa, Mitch Radakovich, Kevin C. Sheetz, Henry Sun, Xuetong (Lisa) Zhou, and Bruce J. Zou.
The group now awaits notice to learn if they have become National Merit finalists. To become a finalist, the student, and his or her high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the semifinalist's academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment and honors and awards received. Last year, 17 Sycamore High School students were recognized as finalists.
Sycamore’s National Merit Scholar semifinalists will be honored at an upcoming Board of Education meeting and will be announced at the Sycamore football game on September 17.
In the next few weeks, Sycamore High School will also announce the names of students who earned commended status in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship program.
Sycamore National Merit Scholar Semifinalists Announced
Sycamore Community Schools is proud to announce 11 Sycamore High School students have been named National Merit Scholar semifinalists. This national distinction places them in the top one percent of high school seniors in the U.S.
