Sycamore High School Students To Compete at Indy 500
A group of Sycamore High School Engineering and Architecture students has been selected to participate in the national Greenpower Electric Car Challenge at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Sycamore is one of 33 high school teams from across the world who has been invited to design, build a Formula 24 level electric kit car. The students will then race the single-seat, student-driven electric car at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the 2017 Indy 500 race festivities on May 1. Students will be paired with a Verizon IndyCar Series driver for the competition.
The Greenpower Electric Car Challenge is a project-based science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics learning initiative. Sycamore’s Engineering and Architecture program, led by teacher Brad Williams, is dedicated to helping students explore STEAM aspects, possible careers in the future, and the promotion of creativity in class. To be selected, students submitted a video showing how STEAM is already being implemented at Sycamore High School. You can watch it by clicking here.

"Racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a dream come true -- and now, it's a reachable goal for a special group of high school students and STEAM educators," said Lisa Noble, Sports Car Club of America president and CEO. "STEAM curriculum really is the science of motorsport, and the SCCA is proud of our association with Greenpower as the program grows in the United States. We're excited to do everything we can to make this a special event for these bright, young minds.”
The Greenpower Electric Car Challenge is sponsored by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, IndyCar, Greenpower USA Foundation, and the School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI.
